Start with Counting Money & Identifying Shapes and Patterns

Having strong number sense sets the foundation for developing higher-level mathematical thinking in
primary school. It is therefore crucial for your child to be given opportunities to explore number concepts
that allow him or her to fully understand the subject.

Children begin to develop numeracy skills from a very early age. If your child is entering Primary 1 next
year, start building your child’s number sense and Math foundation with the following.

1. Start with Counting Money
One of the best ways to incorporate Math into everyday life is by getting your child to manage his or her own money. You can start with his or her weekly allowance — give your child a set amount of money each week and devise a plan for how it should be spent.

Once your child is comfortable with that, you can even get him or her thinking about savings!

Managing allowance is an inevitable part of your child’s Primary 1 experience, so these simple actions will not only teach your child financial literacy but also build the confidence to manage money independently at school.

2. Identify Shapes and Patterns

Being able to recognise shapes and patterns is a key part of mastering Geometry. You can start by asking your child to search for primary shapes such as triangles, squares, rectangles, circles or ovals at home or while you’re out!

Show your child just how much Math informs the way things and places are designed — whether it’s by examining the shapes of leaves or patterns in wall tiles and decals. It’s a fun way to see the beauty of Math and to help your child get excited about the subject.
