My children have grown to be more disciplined from the techniques taught at CMA. The teaching method seems effective and it helped my children improve in mathematics, they are less reliant on me for guidance now!
My boy has been attending CMA at Bukit Batok Branch since 4 years old for 1.5 years now. The course focuses alot on Metal Arithmetic which is an important aspect in Maths (I believe). There are quite a number of workbooks to clear on a weekly basis, Hence the progression of the kid will depend alot on the number of workbooks he/she can clear. My boy started with 3 workbooks weekly (afew pages to be completed per book, not completing the whole book, per week) then progressed to 4, then 5 & 6 workbooks. After clearing which is around a year later, he was qualified to take the exams and move up the grades. Personally I feel my boy improved alot on the mental aspect. He can give answer fast for additions and subtractions with mental calculations or abacus, even when the answers involve 4 figures. However, I realize he is not as good when it comes to simple problem solving or simple subtractions/ additions. I am not sure if it's just my boy or the area of focus is as such. Hence my personal view is if your intention is to train up your child's mental, abacus skills, CMA is fantastic. However, if it's to truly understand Math or solve problems, score in Pri school, it may not be the area of focus. Then again, this may at least set a good foundation for my boy in mental aspect for now. Will need some training to brush up the other aspects soon.
Im very please and also never regret to send my boy last year to learn Mental Arithmetics. Now he can count some simple maths question very fast and get it correctly. The teacher over there is friendly also in answering back my question promptly regarding my boy behaviour in class. Now he not lazy to start doing on the maths assessments which i ask him to do alternate day. He enjoy doing maths question using his abacus and also teach me how to count using the abacus and also will test me using his CMA books. Happy that he's enjoying the class every wednesday. Come back home happily telling us what he had learn.
CMA lessons are fun and engaging whilst at the same time, my child has learnt about being discipline and focused. Music is used to help the children remember some of the fundamental formulas. My 6 year old used to be very fidgety and cannot sit still but I note that her ability to focus has improved dramatically. The teachers are patient and always willing to spend extra time with my child and even myself as a parent to explain the solution or steps. This is good as the parent is then able to guide the child at home when he/ she encounters a roadblock. The teacher will always provide informal verbal feedback after lessons and this is very helpful for parents to help the child in his/ her progression.
