My son is 5.5 years old this year and he is able to add and subtract effortlessly. In the beginning, he was taught the use of the abacus, representation of each beads and the "formula" that they need to remember. The abacus they used are the traditional 5 beads kind. However, theirs are more colorful and shorter as compared to those you can find in popular bookstore. The class is conducted in Mandarin as most of the teachers are from Taiwan. The class is conducted in a classroom setting where the children sit at the desk and the teacher will be at the front teaching from the board with a huge abacus hanging on it. Slowly as my son progress, the teacher will then proceed to teaching them without the use of the physical abacus and get them to imagine using the abacus with their fingers to solve the problem and then progress to mental calculations. I believe this course gives him a competitive edge to other students when completing his math questions in future.
