My boy had attend the trial Math class yesterday. He was relucted to attend the class earlier on when we spoke to him. He's not too keen in Math class as he's facing difficulty in completing his works as it gets too difficult for him. The teacher that's coaching him yesterday was really helpful and encouraging. She encourage him to try the Math worksheet and constantly praise him to get him motivated. My boy manage to finish the worksheet at his comfort level and he's enjoying the class.
My son has been with Eye Level for his Math lessons for about 2 months now. It is a once a week lesson in a tuition centre setting. He will have to complete 2 booklets for each lesson where the teacher will first go through with him the math concept before he attempts the questions. The lesson builds on 2 areas - basic thinking and critical thinking. Each area will have their own set of worksheets and different levels. I guess the higher the level the higher the difficulty of the questions and concept. The worksheet itself will state whether its basic thinking or critical thinking math and also the level and the objective of the worksheet e.g. to be able to count from 1 - 20, to be able to add and subtract. As for the teacher ratio its capped at 1:8. Currently there is only 2 to 3 students which is good as my son gets more attention from the teacher and its more like a one to one tuition setting. They also use teaching materials like blocks, puzzles and bricks to teach some math concept which is much more interesting for the kids.
Went to the branch near my place at Jurong and my daughter was given a Math and critical thinking diagnostic assessment. It is really in the form of like an assessment paper and my daughter will have to complete them on her own. After that the instructor will go through them and explain to me which areas are my girl good or weak at and which level she felt my girl should enroll in. So we decided to give it a try and am quite pleased with the progress. The assessment papers that they do at the centre each week are very colorful and interesting. The papers are structured and titled for different areas of Math e.g. on basic thinking for subtraction, critical thinking for patterns etc. There will be weekly homework to bring home to complete and submit the next lesson. My girl looks forward to doing her homework and making sure she gets them correct as she will be rewarded with a sticker if she does. These papers will also be returned to us which is good so that I can recap with her and also knows what she has learnt in class.
