My girl has been with the school for about a year now. We don't speak Mandarin at home and its impossible to hear her speak any. The only Mandarin environment she's being exposed to is at her childcare centre. However, till now she doesn't have the confidence to converse in Mandarin but she is able to understand and recognize the Chinese characters well. She can only speak very short and simple sentences in Mandarin and is able to recite those Chinese songs taught in class. The teachers are really patient and kind and always willing to feedback on my girl's progress in class. However, I still believe that parents ourselves should try to speak both English and Mandarin with them as much as possible at home to build up their confidence. Well, its usually easier said than done.
