Mastering calculation skills to progress into high school mathematics Characteristics of the Maths Programme: Worksheets with 20 levels starting from 6A to Level O and five elective courses. The worksheets focus on the development of strong calculation skills and, by avoiding all unrelated concepts, aim to allow students to advance as quickly as possible on their own to high school mathematics. Based on his experience as a high school mathematics teacher, the founder, Toru Kumon, was convinced that mastering calculation was the key to enabling students to later apply other mathematical concepts. What really stands out from Kumon as compared to other enrichment and tuition centres are their daily practice papers. I signed my kids up for math as I understand that practice makes perfect! My kids are better in mental calculation now and are slowly progressing pass their education level, which is what I really love about Kumon. Your child is never restricted by their education level or age but by his or her progress. Each individual will be at different level of math according to their ability and progress. Both of my kids have been with kumon since young and the brother result’s in primary school has really shown the benefits of kumon.

Kumon is well known for worksheet exercises and initially i was rather skeptical if i should enrol my son for it as i don't think he has that kind of discipline to sit there and complete worksheets. But luckily i grab the opportunity when there was a free trial promo going on and well with the guidance from the teacher, he was able to. There will be 2 trainers or 1 trainer in class depending on the class size for that lesson. It is more of a individualised learning method where every child will study base on their own level. Now that he is in K2, he is already completing worksheets relating to fractions and multiplications. There will be a lot of repetition in the exercises but the teacher assure that this is to make sure that he really understands the concept and to lay a solid foundation for that topic.

The Kumon method is about independent learning skills and for Math, its about the speed & accuracy in completing worksheets. There are tons of worksheets my child need to complete. Just on addition and subtraction, its like one huge stack of them each. I guess its about practice, practice and practice to improve and excel. Quite repetitive I should say. All work are graded, timed and recorded in the booklet. My child will have to sit through the lesson completing all these worksheets and the facilitator will actually mark them and go through with each child on the concepts and mistakes. There will of cos be homework to be done at home and submitted the next lesson. Overall, its still alright provided my child is willing to complete the so many worksheets.
