There will be an initial assessment which is a short 5min test to see if my son is able to complete which areas of Math so that the trainer can decide on which level to start off with. After that the trainer will then go through with me on their findings and advice me on which level they feel its best and how the program will be structured and how it will benefit him. The class is very individualized based on my child's level and progress according to his pace. So the class will make up of students from different levels depending on my preferred timing and the trainer will prepare all the materials for each student for that lesson. The trainer will first go through the concepts for that day's lesson followed by doing the worksheets. The trainer will also use appropriate tools to enhance learning experience. I like this kind of structure as my son is able to advance faster since he is quite a fast learner himself.
My son went for the preliminary assessment conducted by the trainer to assess whether he was ready to join the class. He was asked to complete some worksheets to determine his standard. The worksheets include things like simple counting, pattern recognition, comparison, connecting of number dots etc After the assessment we decided to go ahead to enroll him to the class as the fees were quite affordable. One lesson per week for an hour and there will be homework to be completed at home. Although my son felt that it was too much of worksheets to be done at home, I wanted him to start such a habit from kindergarten so that he can better cope with primary school homework. He is now able to complete the worksheets faster and complete them on his own better.
We tried out SAM @ Bukit Timah for my 5yo for a whole term of 12 weeks as we got a voucher for free classes. The teachers were friendly and sincere and there are a lot of time slots to choose from which is quite convenient. The child gets about 3 booklets of worksheets a week and they complete the first few pages of 1 or 2 booklets in class and the rest of the booklets are to be done as homework and handed in at the next class. While the worksheets were nicely printed and colourful, my son did not really enjoy them as he found them quite tedious and he felt it was too much homework and writing involved. I would say that the program is good for drilling your child in maths and closely mirrors the primary school syllabus, which is good if that's what you're looking for and your child does not mind the homework load. I accept also that maths requires practice and some amount of homework is definitely necessary. It depends on what style of learning suits your child at the end of the day.
