My boy started his Cherry Tots (N2) at the start of this year. We chose this instead of the popular Berries because I did not want an academic-based enrichment programme at 4yo. I was looking for a fun-based Chinese enrichment class as my boy was showing signs of rejecting Mandarin. After recommedations from friends, I decided to give SHHK Cherry Tots a try. There were a few children crying on the first day of class. Some parents were concerned and asked if they could accompany their children for the first few lessons but the teacher said they could not do that since this is a not a parent-accompanied class. Worried parents were lingering along the corridor. A mother even told me that she would withdraw her boy if he continued crying. At the end of the 1 hour 45 min class, most children came out of the class happily. My boy was very pleased to received biscuits and sweets too. Usually, there will be a main teacher and assistant teacher in the class of max 17 children. Depending on the teacher style, some will teach in a didactic manner; Some will form the children into groups and get them to read the Chinese short poems. Fortunately, my boy's teachers are extremely nice and patient. They will split the children into 2 groups - 1 group is handled by the main teacher and the other will be handled by the assistant teacher. Every week, the children are required to read a new Chinese poem. They will be given a star or reward sticker for every poem read. My boy enjoyed the class very much despite claiming that he's English and doesn't need to speak Mandarin. According to the teachers, he can actually speak Mandarin and read Chinese very well. I am pleased with his progress and will recommend parents to try it if they are looking for an alternative to Berries.
