The programme enables the child to progress systematically through successive levels of the phonic hierarchy from learning basic sound-letter correspondences to decoding simple words and using blending skills when necessary to spelling these words to adding word endings to them to reading meaningful sentences and stories made up of these words and to combining these words with those learnt in the following units. The aim of the programme is to develop basic reading skills as quickly as possible. This means that the exercises the children are asked to complete must remain familiar to them. The child is thus able to focus energy on decoding words and on developing his or her reading ability rather than learning to cope with regularly changing formats.
